These unapproved configurations are using more than 1,400 megawatts of non-stop power. This heavy use puts an added strain on the national energy system, which can affect the availability of electricity for regular users.
To avoid detection, many of these miners operate under the cover of industrial or commercial buildings. They take electricity intended for factories, taking advantage of the lower rates intended for production facilities.
Authorities have stepped up their efforts to identify and shut down illegal miners. In the province of Tehran, officials have closed 104 unauthorized mining sites and seized 1,465 mining devices.
Some areas have become known for such activities, including Pakdasht, Malard, Shahre Qods, and parts of southwestern Tehran where industries are concentrated.
Special inspection teams are currently working with the police to track down and take down illegal operations.
