Americans generally see their country as a respected and powerful on the world stage, but believe that the global influence of the United States is failing.
About nine-or-tone of Americans say it is important that they are now respected around the world. In fact, 57% most says it’s very important.
Less, although most of the 56%still think they are now actually is Dear worldwide. A relatively small proportion says he is now very respected (10%), while the same share says he is not respected at all.
The proportion of Americans who believe it is important that they have not changed now since last year. However, opinions are somewhat different towards the party and age.
Although most Americans believe that their country is respected around the world, 52% say its global influence has become weaker in recent years.
Around a quarter of Americans, it says that US influence has remained approximately the same (24%) or that it has become stronger in recent years (22%).
By comparison, almost three -quarters think that the impact of China is an increase (73%), while almost half says the same about Russia (47%).
And more people say that the international influence of Israel, India and Iran is growing than American influence becomes stronger.
It was also a belief that the influence of the USA to the world is weaker The most common view in April 2024. But Americans have something more likely to say now that their country’s impact is growing (22% by 14% last year).
This increase is at least partly triggered by Republicans, who have become much more positive in their views on global impact in the US: 34% say that the influence of the country is becoming stronger, compared to 10% in 2024. They also became much less likely that US influence would become weaker (37% compared to 67% last year).
The views of Democrats moved in the opposite direction. Compared to 2024, there was a slight decrease in the share of democrats who say that the US influence is becoming stronger (11% compared to 19% last year) and a high increase in proportion that say it becomes weaker (67% compared to 44%).
Adults at the age of 65 and older (32%) are more likely than those between the ages of 50 and 64 (20%) or below 50 (19%) to say that the American influence in the world is getting stronger.
When evaluating other countries, one of the largest shifts of 2024 is that Americans see Iran’s influence on the world stage. Compared to last year, more Americans now say that Iran’s influence was decaying (28% compared to 16% then), and fewer Americans say it gets stronger (26% compared to 39%).
Despite the beliefs of many Americans to lose global influence, most still say that the US is the leading military force in the world (76%), and about half says that it is a leading economic power (48%). The next highest stakes say that China is the world’s leading economic (38%) and military (14%) power.
As with other ratings of the US, Republicans generally have a more positive attitude about the standing of their country: 58% say that it is a top economic force (compared to 40% of democrats), while 80% says it is the main military force (73% of Democrats).
