January not only signals the beginning of a new year, but also begins an event that many are waiting for – Galaxy Unpacked 2025. With the event scheduled for January 22, here are four announcements that I have my fingers crossed.
Galaxy S25 Slim
Following past tradition, Samsung typically releases three devices in its flagship Galaxy S series: a standard model, a Plus and an Ultra. Occasionally, Samsung presents an FE (Fan Edition) model months after the release of the standard line, which offers many of the best features of the original devices at a cheaper price.
However, this year, Samsung is reported adding a fourth device to the line: the Galaxy S25 Slim. The teaser of the event seems to support this rumor, showing four different phones placed side by side.
Since I carry my devices everywhere, portability always plays a big role in my purchasing decisions. As such, the Galaxy S25 Slim is an addition that I’m really excited about.
The Galaxy S25 Slim is expected to have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, built on TSMC’s 3nm process. The phone is also expected to pack an “Ultra” camera setup, including a 200 MP main camera sensor similar to last year’s Ultra model, which takes great photos according to the tests presented in our. S24 Ultra review.
The device is about 6.4mm thick and features a 6.7-inch OLED display.
While part of me suspects we won’t see this phone until mid-2025, it doesn’t hurt to hope for an earlier launch! After all, rumours have been floating about Apple releasing an iPhone 17 Air this fall, so Samsung can release its slimmer phone first to get a head start on the market!
Galaxy S25 series
As mentioned above, Samsung typically announces its flagship smartphone lineup for the year during its Galaxy Unpacked event in January, and this year is expected to follow the same pattern. All three devices are expected to pack Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and run Samsung’s One UI 7 on top of Android 15.
Rumors suggest that the screen size for the Galaxy S25 and S25+ will remain the same as their predecessors, while the S25 Ultra may have a slightly larger 6.9-inch display.
While most high-end Android phones now come with 12 GB of RAM, including 2024 Z Flip 6the basic Samsung flagship has yet to make the change. That is expected to change soon, with the Galaxy S25 including 12 GB of RAM in all storage variants. The basic storage will probably also increase to 256 GB.
Project Moohan
While Samsung mainly focuses on the flagship Galaxy S series during January’s Galaxy Unpacked event, it often surprises us with additional product announcements as well. For example, the tech giant revealed the Galaxy Ring with the Galaxy S24 series in Unpacked 2024.
While I don’t expect a debut in Galaxy Ring 2 this time, Samsung can announce either the XR smart glasses or its take on the Apple Vision Pro, both part of Samsung’s internal project, codenamed Project Moohan.
The existence of the AR glasses and the headset was confirmed in a blog post on Samsung Newsroom on December 13, 2024. Luckily, rumors suggest that they might make their debut in Galaxy Unpacked 2025!
New Galaxy AI features
2024 was all about Artificial Intelligence, and I don’t expect this year to be any different. That’s why I expect Samsung’s entire S25 lineup to be packed with a wealth of AI features alongside the the best Galaxy AI tools from previous models.
Similar to how Apple revamped Siri with Apple Intelligence, Samsung plans to use AI to make its digital assistant, Bixby, more powerful. This should hopefully bring it on par with competitors like Siri. The enhanced Bixby will be able to handle more complex commands.
The new flagship phones will also be deeply integrated with Google’s Gemini AI model, which allows you to manage tasks in applications directly on the device. All in all, I really hope that the Galaxy AI will feature tools that I can actually use every day.
At the end of the day, all we can do is wait for Galaxy Unpacked 2025 to roll out and see what Samsung really has in store. Meanwhile, if you plan to upgrade your current smartphone, Samsung is offering a $50 credit when you reserve the latest Galaxy device on its website.
The best part? There is no commitment, so if you change your mind, you have nothing to lose. So, now might be a good time to get your name on the list before the offer ends!
