Millions of IVF-created embryos are frozen in time, stored in cryopreservation containers around the world. The number is only growing thanks to advances in technology, the increasing popularity of IVF and improving success rates.
At a basic level, an embryo is simply a tiny ball of about a hundred cells. But unlike other types of body tissue, it has the potential for life. Many argue that this gives embryos a special moral status, which requires special protection.
The problem is that no one can really agree on what that status is. To some, it’s human cells and nothing else. For others, they are morally equal to children. Many consider that they are somewhere between these two extremes.
