In September 2024, the international money exchange MoneyGram was hit with a data breach affecting its more than 150 million users.
While this data breach has long since been fixed, this is a small reminder that MoneyGram offers up to two years of identity protection and credit monitoring for you, as long as you actively register.
What happened to MoneyGram?
At the end of September 2024, the reports emerged MoneyGram suffered a significant data breach. Given that MoneyGram has more than 150 million users worldwide and a significant number in the United States, this breach affected a significant number of people.
The attack between September 20 and 22, 2024, caused a five-day loss of service. A confidential source said Bleeping Computer that the company was breached by a social engineering attack, and that there was no ransomware at play.
The data breached included names, email addresses, postal addresses, social security numbers, government IDs, and more.

In addition, MoneyGram is offering affected users up to two years of free credit monitoring and analysis. Additional monitoring will ensure that financial or personal data is not used further once the dust has settled on the initial breach.
