Every foldable iPhone and iPad rumor we’ve heard so far

Apple apparently it works on some foldable devices. let’s talk

Rumors have been swirling around the internet for months (if not years) that Apple is joining the folding fray that companies like. Samsung have found success in recent years. There have been so many rumors and so many unnecessary speculations on top of them that it would be impossible to cover everything in one article, but the latest and most credible reports indicate two foldable devices coming out of Cupertino: a new iPhone and a new one iPad.

Without wasting any more time, let’s dig in. Here’s what we know about Apple’s potential first foldables.

Foldable iPhone: What we know

Since then, we have heard about a foldable iPhone until 2021 at least, but the most recent rounds of reporting have painted a clearer picture of what to expect from this device, and when we can expect it.

Back in February, The information said Apple was working on a clamshell-style foldable iPhone. If you’re not familiar with the terminology, that would make it more similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip series of phones, which fold into a very small form factor and expand into almost the size and shape of a normal smartphone. This is distinct from the Galaxy Z Fold Form factor, which is approximately the size and shape of a regular smartphone when folded, and more similar to a small tablet when unfolded.

Mashable Light Speed

Once more recent than report from the Wall Street Journal in December he corroborated this, suggesting that the size of the display of the new device exceeds that of the iPhone 16 Pro Max when it develops. According to this report, this device could actually launch in 2026, but this is far from a guarantee at this stage. As always with unannounced concept devices, there is always a distinct possibility that it will never come out.

However, where there is smoke, there tends to be fire. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman (who is known to be correct about Apple more often) also said in his Newsletter Power On in December that a foldable iPhone could launch in 2026. If two different major outlets feel almost the same thing about this device, there may be more than just a rumor.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much else to say definitively about the foldable iPhone. If these reports are to be believed, we can be almost two years away from even seeing the device, much less holding it in our hands. Relevant details such as design, price, battery life and special software features will have to wait until then.

Foldable iPad: What we know

The good news about the foldable iPad is that the two mentioned above Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg reports presented information about it, instead of just the foldable iPhone. The bad news is that we don’t know much more about the iPad than the iPhone.

The WSJ report indicated that Apple is working on a larger device that is “intended to serve as a laptop.” The display, when opened, would be about 19 inches in size, which is larger than the largest. MacBook shows between four and five inches. This is roughly in line with previous reports from a Korean outlet The Electwho said in 2022 that Apple was working on a 20-inch foldable display for use in a laptop or tablet.

But is it a MacBook or an iPad? We don’t know for sure. The WSJ report suggested it would be closer to a laptop, but Gurman’s newsletter said it would be more like a large iPad and likely run on iPadOS instead of macOS. The difference is big, since iPadOS and macOS do not have the same set of functions and are not compatible with all the same apps.

It will be a while before we know, regardless. Gurman suggested that this larger device would be launched in 2028, well after the launch of the supposed foldable iPhone. All of these reports also suggest technical hurdles that need to be cleared, such as making sure these devices are as thin as possible and can lay flat when they’re undone. If the rumors are to be believed, Apple has a lot of time to solve those problems before these products see the light of day.
