The judge overseeing the case against Patrick Eganthe man accused of racially assaulting a Colorado Springs reporter, said Egan posed “a significant risk to the safety of the community.”
She refused to lower Egan’s bail and expressed concern about Egan’s willingness and ability to appear in court.
Egan is accused of assaulting a KKCO/KJCT reporter Yes Ronn Alex on December 18.
He reportedly followed Alex in his car before asking Alex at a traffic light, “Are you even a citizen of the United States? This is Trump’s America Now. I’m a Marine and I took an oath to protect this country from people like you.” He later confronted and choked Alex outside the KKCO building, the affidavit said.
“The allegations in this case are very troubling,” the deputy district court DA Victoria Fazzino he said. “People have concerns for the safety of the victims (and) concerns for the safety of the community. The fact that he is a marine, we understand that may be a mitigating factor in some ways, but in others, it was part of it offense where he said he was a sailor and he had to protect the country.”
“That makes people concerned about the safety of the community,” said Fazzino. “People feel that bond is appropriate where it is set based on the allegations in this case and his prior history.”
“He’s had some ongoing mental health issues for about two decades,” the public defender said Ruth Swift. “… Mr. Wilson has seen Egan go through some ups and downs. He told me that he was usually able to help intervene before things got to a point where there was some danger for the community or for Mr. Egan.
Egan is due back in court on January 16.
