Luther Vandross was a once in a generation musical talent. A new documentary has come our way, honoring the star and chronicling his story. Luther: Never too much, directed and executive produced by award-winning director Dawn Porter, debuted at the Sundance Film Festival last year and aired on CNN on Sunday. Now, the film will be released in UK and Irish cinemas on January 30 for one night only, with a new trailer today.
Vandross’ hits include the timeless bangers “Never Too Much,” “Dance with My Father,” “Here and Now,” “Power of Love/Love Power,” to name a few. Beginning his career as a back-up vocalist for the likes of David Bowie, Donna Summer, Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Chaka Khan, Roberta Flack (to name but a few), Vandross has sold 40 million records in the world during his career. , with 11 consecutive platinum albums.
Using archival footage of interviews with Vandross, who died in 2005, the film tells the story of the singer’s life, with contributions from his close friends and collaborators, including Dionne Warwick, Roberta Flack, Mariah Carey and Valerie Simpson.
The film explores the hits and achievements that have marked Grammy-winning Vandross’ career, but in addition to the highs that have marked his life, the film will explore the lows, including his struggle to earn the respect that the his music deserved, the discrimination he faced as a Black artist, the intrusive comments he suffered about his weight, and struggle in his personal life.
Luther: Never Too Much will be released in UK and Irish cinemas on January 30. The film was released in the United States in 2024, and can be broadcast via CNN on Hulu with Live TV.
