After three long years, Severity he finally came back with his second seasonand things are as mysterious and confusing as ever.
The good news? After a disorienting start, where it looks like Mark (Adam Scott) has had his team replaced, he finally reunites with Dylan (Zach Cherry), Irving (John Turturro) and Helly (Britt Lower). The bad news? Helly decides to lie to them about what she saw outside at the end of season 1.
What happens with Helly in Severity Season 2, episode 1?
We know from The last episode of season 1 who Helly really is outside the cut plan: She is actually Helena Eagan, a direct descendant of Lumen founder/CEO Kier Eagan and the daughter of Lumon’s current CEO. While outside he takes the stage to give a speech, telling the confused audience that the hymns are “prisoners”, declaring: “They are torturing us down there!” before being tackled by security.
In the first episode of the second season, however, Helly has a different story for her friends. Instead of saying that she’s out, she tells him that when she woke up, she was in an apartment alone.

“I was watching some nature show on TV, wearing sweatpants and a T-shirt,” says Helly. “So I went out and found a guy; he looked like a gardener. He told him everything. I think he thought it was bullshit, but he said his brother was a policeman and he was telling him everything. I don’t know. Sorry, guys i really tried.
Why does Helly lie to others about what she saw?
There are really only three possible explanations for why Helly could be lying to others. The first, and perhaps the most likely, is that she is ashamed. His job is not just an employee at Lumon – he is literally one of the highest. To some extent, it is responsible for what the anthems pass on the cutting board. Maybe Helly is lying because she doesn’t want her friends to think badly of her?
The second option is that she is lying because Lumon has some sort of leverage over her. Maybe they forced her to tell a certain story, and threatened her with something bad if she didn’t.
The third and most option is that it is not really innie Helly. Maybe, just maybe, the Helly who meets Mark and the others is his counterpart, Helena, disguised by her innie to get information about what the others know.
